It is clear to see by the sheer quantity and quality of surrounding courses that golf is a particularly popular pastime with locals in Memphis. There are roughly a dozen very decent courses within comfortable driving distance of the city center, with the nine-hole Overton Park and 18-hole Pine Hill golf courses being especially central and easy to reach.Slightly further afield and in the direction of Germantown, to the far east of the city, the Fox Meadows Golf Course opened in the early 1960s and comes with 18 holes and well-maintained Bermuda greens. Many further courses are based on this side of the city, such as the Memphis Country Club, Audubon Park, the Galloway and the Chickasaw Country Club.
