Getting Around, Memphis Travel and Memphis Transport

Memphis is a relatively well-planned city and it's easy to get around by public transport and travel options, except at peak travel times. Memphis' famous Main Street Trolley lines are a unique way to travel to most areas of interest to tourists including Mud Island, Beale Street and the National Civil Rights Museum. If you're traveling between downtown and East Memphis, a car is useful method of transport.

Driving in Memphis can be a blessing and a bane, depending on the traffic. A car is pretty much indispensable for the journey between downtown and East Memphis and parking is not usually problematic. Renting a car in Memphis is easy and all major car rental companies have offices here. The city is served east-west by I-40 and north-south by I-55, and the US78 and US72 are the only other major routes that travel into Memphis.

The citywide bus service is run by the Memphis Area Transit Authority and travels to the city's main attractions. Bus stops are green and white and schedules can be obtained from the Memphis Area Transit Authority. Alternatively, simply ask a bus driver for information. There is a Greyhound terminal at 203 Union Avenue in Memphis, offering connections to cities across the US.
